Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with the official as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Istanbul. The official then moved to Svilengrad in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1900 to 1904.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 800 in 1900/01, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
