Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmet Şefik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Şefik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1887/88, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmet Şefik in Kastamonu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Şefik then moved to Karadeniz Ereğli in 1891/92, then Erzurum from 1892 to 1899. The last posts were in Ankara from 1899 to 1905.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Karadeniz Ereğli, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
