Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Tahsin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Tahsin began work in Karadeniz Ereğli in 1885/86, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Hasan Tahsin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erzincan, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Bartın from 1892 to 1900, then Latakia (Lazkiye), Kozan and Alaşehir from 1900 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1904/05. The last post was in Balıkesir in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 540 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in Alaşehir, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. After 17 years the salary stood below the first, 400 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
