Life#
İbrahim Edip Efendi was born in Erbil in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Erbil in 1883/84, at about 11, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with İbrahim Edip as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mosul (Musul), where the entries run to 1892/93. İbrahim Edip then moved to Zakho in 1893/94, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then Rawanduz (Revanduz) from 1894 to 1901. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Edip to Zakho in 1901/02. The last posts were in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1902 to 1905.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 800 in 1893/94, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Zakho, when four in five paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 760 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
