Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nuri also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 13, in 1887/88, Mehmet Nuri began work in Baghdad (Bağdat), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mosul (Musul), where the entries run to 1894/95. Mehmet Nuri then moved to Çemişgezek, Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) and Giresun, four places in seven years, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Mardin from 1902 to 1907.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 600 in 1905/06, the peak, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Mardin, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
