Life#
Mehmet Sami Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Sami also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Mardin in 1896/97, at about 17, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmet Sami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Nusaybin, where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Mardin and Diyarbakır from 1901 to 1906 and Mardin again in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 250 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 27,600 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
