Life#
Born in Gerede in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Celalettin Efendi was the child of a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1895/96, Ahmet Celalettin began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 70 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Ahmet Celalettin in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) in Istanbul. The lists have no entry for 1898 to 1902. The last posts were in Hicaz from 1902 to 1910, first as an official (Memur), from 1906/07 as Mevkuf Memuru. Hicaz, about 2,250 km from Gerede, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 70 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 700 in 1909/10, as Mevkuf Memuru in Hicaz, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
