Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Mikail Kuyumcuyan Efendi was the child of a jeweller (kuyumcu). Mikail Kuyumcuyan had seven years of schooling, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi), and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 16, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mikail Kuyumcuyan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Sehir Posta Memuru, where the entries run to 1879/80. Mikail Kuyumcuyan then moved to Galata from 1880 to 1885, then Beyoğlu from 1885 to 1890, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mikail Kuyumcuyan to Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1890 to 1894, with a rise to Ittihat Posta Muduru in 1890/91. The lists have no entry for 1894 to 1901. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1907.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 1,200 in 1890/91, the peak, as Ittihat Posta Muduru in Thessaloniki, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 216,600 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
