Life#
Ahmet Raşit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Raşit also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Raşit began work in Tekirdağ in 1868/69, at about 13, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Ahmet Raşit as an official (Memur) in Tekirdağ, where the entries run to 1879/80, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1874/75. Next came Karacabey and Edirne from 1880 to 1884. From 1884 to 1897 the annual entries place Ahmet Raşit in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru), from 1892/93 as Muhabere Memuru.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 975 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 877 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
