Life#
Abdullah Süreyya Efendi was born in Dobrich (Hacıoğlu Pazarcığı) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Vlorë (Avlonya) in 1884/85, at about 29, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Abdullah Süreyya as Muvassil in Vlorë, where the entries run to 1886/87. Next came Levadya from 1887 to 1897, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş). The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1897/98 and Kuzukoy in 1898/99.
