Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Antuan Teofilidi Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Antuan Teofilidi had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Antuan Teofilidi knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 16, in 1876/77, Antuan Teofilidi began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Antuan Teofilidi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Vlorë (Avlonya). Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1881 to 1883, then a return to Vlorë from 1885 to 1898. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1885. Antuan Teofilidi then moved to Tarabya in 1899/1900 and Beyoğlu in 1900/01. The last posts were in Keşan from 1901 to 1906, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 600 in 1885/86, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Vlorë, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 150,240 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
