Life#
Asador Efendi was born in Gümüşhane in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Asador also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Trabzon in 1881/82, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Asador as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Samsun. Asador then moved to Pristina (Priştine), Priboj (Priboy), Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) and Urla, four places in eight years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1892/93. The last post was in Zvornik (İzvornik) in 1894/95.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 800 in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Urla, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
