Life#
Artin Efendi was born in Edirne in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Artin also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 21, in 1882/83, Artin began work in Edirne, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Artin as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Pristina (Priştine), where the entries run to 1888/89. Artin then moved to Skopje (Üsküp) from 1889 to 1891. The last posts were in Kumanovo (Kumanova) from 1891 to 1897.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1891/92, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Kumanovo, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
