Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Ahmet Refik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Yozgat in 1879/80, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ahmet Refik in Yozgat, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1889/90. Ahmet Refik then moved to Kayseri from 1890 to 1892, then back to Yozgat from 1892 to 1900. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Refik to Kayseri in 1900/01. The last posts were in Yozgat again from 1904 to 1907. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
