Life#
Ahmet İzzet Efendi was born in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1885/86, Ahmet İzzet began work in Tokat, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ahmet İzzet as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Yozgat, where the entries run to 1903/04. The last post was in Kırşehir in 1904/05.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Merkez Memuru in Yozgat, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over 13 years pay ended where it began, at 380 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
