Life#
Aziz Efendi was born in Giresun in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a regimental quartermaster (alay emini). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Aziz also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Aziz began work in Giresun in 1881/82, at about 12, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Aziz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in İnebolu, where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Yozgat from 1889 to 1905, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1892/93. The last posts were in Aleppo (Halep) from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 1,500 in 1905/06, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Aleppo, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. Aziz probably has an entry in "Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Giresunlu devlet adamları (1879-1909)" by AHMET YADİ (2014) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
