Life#
Yaver Yorgi Efendi was born in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1869/70 (AH 1286), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, and the father's occupation was "Yaver". Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Yaver Yorgi also spoke French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Yaver Yorgi began work in Didymoteicho in 1883/84, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Yaver Yorgi in Soufli (Sofulu) as Musillik. Next came Edirne from 1889 to 1892. The last posts were in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1892 to 1896, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1894/95.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 500 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Svilengrad, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96. Yaver Yorgi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Dimetokalı memurlar" by SİBEL EDEMEN (2025) (the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number and the birth year agree).
