Life#
Vahram Şalcıyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Vahram Şalcıyan also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Vahram Şalcıyan began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 17, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Vahram Şalcıyan as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Beşiktaş. Next came Galata from 1888 to 1896. For 1896 to 1900 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Suriye in 1900/01 and Istanbul in 1901/02 and Bitola (Manastır) in 1902/03.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Suriye, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 450 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
