Life

Agop Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Agop also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.

Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1892/93, every annual entry places Agop in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Beyoğlu.

Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 150 in 1891/92, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when 6 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
