Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Mehmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Hamdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 21, paid from the start, on 40 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Mehmet Hamdi in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
