Life#
Garon Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Garon also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Galata in 1877/78, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Garon as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1880/81. Garon then moved to Bab-i vala, Al-Khums (Hums) and Galata from 1881 to 1887, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1882/83, then Beyoğlu from 1887 to 1905, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 1,300 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 300,252 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
