Life#
Dimitri Altunyadi Efendi was born in Konya in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). Dimitri Altunyadi knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 13, in 1868/69, Dimitri Altunyadi began work in Yozgat, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Dimitri Altunyadi as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Çeşme, where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came four places in eight years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1882/83, then a return to Diyarbakır from 1883 to 1897. The last posts were in Elazığ from 1897 to 1905.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 1,000 in 1882/83, as 2. Müdür in Başkale, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
