Life#
Born in Samsun in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Nişan Sultanyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Nişan Sultanyan had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1873/74, Nişan Sultanyan began work in Samsun, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Nişan Sultanyan in Beyoğlu in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), where the entries run to 1878. From 1878 to 1897 every annual entry places Nişan Sultanyan in Izmir (İzmir), with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 650 in 1890/91, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 133,860 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
