Life#
Omer Salim Efendi was born in Elazığ in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Omer Salim began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Beyoğlu in 1875/76, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From 1876/77 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Omer Salim in Beyoğlu, first as Muntasik, from 1887/88 in the Bidayet Mahkemesi Kitabeti.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 1,000 in 1895/96, in the Bidayet Mahkemesi Kitabeti in Beyoğlu, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 252,504 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. Omer Salim received a rank (rütbe).
