Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Mehmet Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "meclis emval azasi". Work began in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 22, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Ali in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Bidayet Mahkemesi Kitabeti, where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ali to Üsküdar in 1895/96, then back to Istanbul from 1896 to 1899. Mehmet Ali then moved to Bitola (Manastır) and Krujë (Akçahisar) from 1899 to 1906, with a rise to 2. Ticaret Mahkemesi Riyaseti in 1899/1900. The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 1,800 in 1899/1900, the peak, as 2. Ticaret Mahkemesi Riyaseti in Bitola, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
