Life#
Born in Arapgir in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Hüseyin Şerif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hüseyin Şerif had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1891/92, Hüseyin Şerif began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From 1891/92 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Hüseyin Şerif in Istanbul, first in the Muhendis Kalemi, from 1897/98 in the Deavi Kalemi and from 1900/01 in the Hukuk Kalemi.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 500 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the Deavi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
