Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Mehmet Said Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "sube Muduru". Mehmet Said began work in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 17, paid from the start, on 320 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Said in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), where the entries run to 1895/96, with a rise to a post in the Muhendis Kalemi in 1892/93. Mehmet Said then moved to Paris from 1896 to 1899. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1910, first in the Sefaret 3. Kitabeti, from 1907/08 as Ticaret Nezareti Fenniyesi. The farthest post, Paris, lay about 2,250 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 320 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 2,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Ticaret Nezareti Fenniyesi in Istanbul, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
