Standing and pay of its pupils

Pupils of the school of 1872 were paid 30, 50, 80 or 120 kuruş a month by class; the school of 1911 promised 600 kuruş on appointment. Officials who had attended the ministry's telegraph school earned about 12 per cent more than officials with lower schooling at the same age.

History

The Fünun-ı Telgrafiye Mektebi opened in Istanbul in 1861 with a two-year course of theory in the mornings and practice in the afternoons. A second school for the trainees was authorised in 1872 and closed about 1880, when telegraphy was taught at Darüşşafaka instead. The ministry founded a new school after the revolution of 1908; its regulation was published in 1910 and it opened in October 1911.
