Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Nuri Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 18, in 1873/74, Nuri began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Nuri to Edirne, Selimiye and Cobancesme from 1876 to 1878, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1876/77. From 1879 to 1907 every annual entry places Nuri again in Istanbul. The lists give Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1878/79 instead of a title.
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 970 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 180,312 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
