Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266), Ahmet Latif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Latif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1868/69, Ahmet Latif began work in Travnik, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Ahmet Latif in Karaagac as an official (Memur). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Latif to Turgutlu in 1877/78, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). From 1878 to 1906 every annual entry places Ahmet Latif in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 800 in 1877/78, as 2. Müdür in Turgutlu, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over 32 years the salaries add up to 208,260 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
