Life#
Fahri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Berber". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Fahri also attended the telegraph school.
Fahri began work in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 21, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Fahri in Babiali as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Fahri then moved to Beşiktaş from 1876 to 1878. From 1878 to 1889 every annual entry places Fahri in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 350 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 51,780 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1888/89.
