Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Naili Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Abdullah Naili had 12 years of schooling, at the Military School (Harbiye Mektebi), attended the telegraph school as well, and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish. Few officials studied at Harbiye Mektebi; only 6 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
Abdullah Naili began work in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Abdullah Naili as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep), where the entries run to 1871/72. Next came Jaffa (Yafa) and Latakia (Lazkiye) from 1872 to 1878, then a return to Jaffa from 1878 to 1880. Abdullah Naili then moved to Rashaya (Raşeya) from 1880 to 1892. The last posts were in Baniyas (Banyas) from 1892 to 1896. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 600 in 1893/94, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Baniyas, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96; the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
