Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Gerope Gümüş Gerdan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Istanbul in 1864/65, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Gerope Gümüş Gerdan in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Gerope Gümüş Gerdan to Gelibolu from 1869 to 1871, then back to Beyoğlu from 1871 to 1878. Gerope Gümüş Gerdan then moved to Yenişehir, Beyoğlu and Bursa from 1878 to 1883, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1883 to 1894. Next came Jaffa (Yafa) and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1894 to 1900. The last posts were in Izmir again from 1900 to 1905. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,000 in 1878, the peak, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Yenişehir, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
