Life#
Hazarusyan Misbak Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Hazarusyan Misbak also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1864/65, Hazarusyan Misbak began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Hazarusyan Misbak as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1887/88. Hazarusyan Misbak then moved to Ioannina in 1888/89. From 1889 to 1905 every annual entry places Hazarusyan Misbak again in Beyoğlu. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 38 years or more.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 800 in 1888/89, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Ioannina, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 530 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
