Life#
Neşet Agop Tokluyan Yakop Efendi was born in Arapgir in 1847/48 (AH 1264), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Neşet Agop Tokluyan Yakop also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1864/65, Neşet Agop Tokluyan Yakop began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Neşet Agop Tokluyan Yakop as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut. Next came four places in eight years, then a return to Diyarbakır from 1877 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Neşet Agop Tokluyan Yakop to Trabzon, Gümüşhane and Birecik from 1879 to 1887, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1880/81, then back to Diyarbakır from 1887 to 1890. The last posts were in Çemişgezek and Ayvalık from 1890 to 1894 and Edremit in 1894/95, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1891/92. Few officials served in as many provinces; 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 600 in 1869/70, as Muhabere Memuru in Merzifon, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
