Life#
Abdullah Şükrü Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1839/40 (AH 1255) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1863/64, Abdullah Şükrü began work in Diyarbakır, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Abdullah Şükrü in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1879/80. Abdullah Şükrü then moved to Mosul (Musul) from 1880 to 1885, then Maskanah (Meskene) from 1885 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Cizre from 1898 to 1905, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Entries spanning 43 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
