Life#
Hacı Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Emin began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 25, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1862/63, to 1899/1900, every annual entry places Mehmet Emin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Tekirdağ. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 13 kept one title in one place throughout. Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 720 in 1864/65, the peak, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 480 kuruş. In all, 39 years of salary come to 200,760 kuruş, 80 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
