Life#
Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Terzibasi". Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
Hüsnü began work in Istanbul in 1849/50, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1856/57, with Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Hüsnü then moved to five places in 16 years, then back to Istanbul from 1875 to 1878. Next came Tuna, Shkodër (İşkodra) and Istanbul from 1878 to 1880, then Hudavendigar from 1880 to 1890. The last posts were in Konya and Bursa from 1890 to 1894 and Kastamonu from 1894 to 1896. In all, 12 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 2,600 in 1879/80, the peak, as Müdür in Istanbul, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 43.3 times the first salary, a rise matched by 42 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The last annual entry is for 1895/96; the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
