Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1860/61, Ali Rıza began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Bitola, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places Ali Rıza in Bitola, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) from 1863 to 1865 and Rumeli in 1866/67.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 700 in 1866/67, the peak, as Emlak Memuru in Rumeli, when 57 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1866/67.
