Life#
Ömer Adil Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1866/67, Ömer Adil began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ömer Adil in Mersin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Drama, Grova and Edirne from 1870 to 1874, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1873/74, then Gedos from 1874 to 1882, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Ömer Adil then moved to Söğüt from 1882 to 1890, then Soma, Söke and Foča (Foça) from 1890 to 1903. The last post was in Tavas in 1903/04. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 860 in 1875/76, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Gedos, when three in four paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
