Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ali Rıza also attended the telegraph school.
Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 210 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Ali Rıza in Üsküdar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Keşan, Batumi (Batum), Çanakkale, Rhodes (Rodos) and Chios (Sakız), five places in eight years, then back to Rhodes from 1879 to 1889, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1880/81. Next came Karaagac from 1889 to 1901, then Demirci from 1901 to 1903. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1904 to 1907. Seven provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 210 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 800 in 1880/81, as 2. Müdür in Rhodes, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
