Life#
Born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Enver Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 21, in 1869/70, Enver began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 220 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Enver as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Istanbul. Enver then moved to six places in 12 years, from Sirkeci to Biga, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1880/81, then Sapanca from 1882 to 1891. The last posts were in Yemen from 1896 to 1898, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru). Yemen, about 3,700 km from Skopje, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 8 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home. Seven provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 220 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 950 in 1896/97, as Merkez Memuru in Yemen, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1897/98, the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death). Enver probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Kayıtlarına göre Üsküp doğumlu memurlar" by HALENUR DİLOĞLU (2021) (the name and the birthplace agree).
