Life#
Born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); the official also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in Niš (Niş) in 1861/62, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places the official in Prizren as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The official then moved to Sjenica (Seniçe) and Peja (İpek) from 1867 to 1873, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1869/70, then back to Prizren from 1874 to 1878. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1879. Next came Kozani (Kozana) from 1879 to 1884. From 1885 to 1899 the annual entries place the official in Eşme.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 800 in 1869/70, as 2. Müdür in Peja, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 202,800 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
