Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Zeki Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Abdullah Zeki had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
At about 16, in 1858/59, Abdullah Zeki began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Elazığ, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Abdullah Zeki in Elazığ in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). The annual lists then follow Abdullah Zeki to six places in nine years, from Diyarbakır to Malatya, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1868/69. The last post was in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1873/74.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 850 in 1872/73, the peak, as Memur in Malatya, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1873/74. Abdullah Zeki probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Eğinli (Kemaliyeli) Devlet adamları ..." by ÖMER FERİT İMLAK (2012) (the name and the birthplace agree).
