Life#
Born in Hayrabolu in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Mehmed Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmed Akif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tekirdağ in 1860/61, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 576 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Mehmed Akif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tekirdağ. Next came five places in 13 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1867/68, then a return to Kırklareli from 1877 to 1878. Mehmed Akif then moved to Kumru from 1878 to 1882, then Merzifon from 1882 to 1892. From 1893 to 1906 the annual entries place Mehmed Akif in Sapanca. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 576 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 800 in 1869/70, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Prilep, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 43 years pay ended below where it began, 540 kuruş against 576. After the last annual entry, for 1905/06, the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
