Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Şükrü Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İsmail Şükrü began work in Istanbul in 1856/57, at about 13, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1856/57, places İsmail Şükrü in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Enderunu Humayun, where the entries run to 1861/62. İsmail Şükrü then moved to Bitola (Manastır) and Botevgrad (Orhaniye) from 1863 to 1869, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1863/64, then Kosova from 1869 to 1879. From 1879 to 1905 the annual entries place İsmail Şükrü in Kratovo (Kratova). For 1893 to 1895 the lists have no entry. Entries spanning 50 years are rare, reached by only 12 of the 5,211 officials.
