Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), Hasan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Nufus Memuru". Hasan was taught by a private teacher.
At about 16, in 1852/53, Hasan began work in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 20 kuruş. From 1856/57 to 1878/79 every annual entry places Hasan in Istanbul, the birthplace, with five changes of title, from Rumeli Varidat Muhasebesi to Muhasebe Kalemi Baskitabeti in 1874/75. In place of a title the lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1865/66 and Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1871/72.
The salary went from 20 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 2,500 in 1874/75, the peak, as Muhasebe Kalemi Baskitabeti in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 326,040 kuruş, 2.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. Pay rose to 125 times the first salary; only 9 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The last annual entry is for 1878/79; the list of 1879/80 (AH 1297) gives the status word Vefat (death).
