Life#
İsmail İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1841/42 (AH 1257), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 16, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. From 1857/58 to 1902/03 every annual entry places İsmail İsmet in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from Irsaliye Memuru to sorting room (Tefrik Odası) in 1892/93. Of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more, 15 stayed in one place throughout. Few careers in the lists are as long; 32 of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 47 years or more.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 600 in 1876/77, as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 42 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş. In all, 42 years of salary come to 237,780 kuruş, 88 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
