Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Celaleddin Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). İsmail Celaleddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1895/96, at about 16, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with İsmail Celaleddin as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1909, with a rise to a post in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 250 in 1900/01, the peak, in the Tefrik Odası in Istanbul, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 30,600 kuruş, 39 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
