Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Mehmet İbrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet İbrahim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet İbrahim as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu. Mehmet İbrahim then moved to Bandırma from 1896 to 1903, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Balıkesir in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1896/97, as Muhabere Memuru in Bandırma, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 39,000 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
